CJ Hobgood's top five reads

CJ Hobgood is well-spoken, intelligent, and a very good surfer. World champ even. He and his twin brother Damien run one of the better pro surfer blogs that populate the interwebs, The Goods life.  In comparison to a lot of the other self-run surfer blogs, their spelling and grammar are impeccable. The telltale sign of a reader, or just a surfer who runs his text through a spellcheck before clicking "post". So what are CJ's favourite books? He gave us his top five.

1. Lone Survivor by  Marcus Luttrell with Patrick Robinson
The story of a Navy Seal who survives a brutal battle in mountainous Afghanistan which left the rest of his team dead.
When did you read it: Lakie Peak, Indo. Globe trip, June 2-15 2010
How'd it get in your hands: Travis, my little bro, gave it to me.
Why is it one of your favourite books: Relevant. Desribes the tribes that have lived in the Afghan mountains forever, these are the people that help the Taliban and etc survive out there. Love the part where a couple goat herders stumble upon the Seals by accident and they're not armed, but the Seals must make a decision of what to do with these two goat herders. They let the herders go and four hours later 150 men are coming over the mountain after these four seals.

2. The Shack by WM Paul Young
A modern Christian fable, where a grieving father has his faith renewed after a discussion with God.
When did you read it: Not sure. A  couple years ago.
How'd it get in your hands: Heard it was a good book and bought it.
Why is it one of your favourite books: Love this one guy.

3. Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller
A semi-autobiographical book looking at the author's understanding of spirituality.
When did you read it: Tavarua, seven years ago.
How did it get in your hands: Jamie Twortoski, a friend, gave it to me.
Why is it one of your favourite books: True. Real. Relevant to me.

4. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
A firsthand account of  a child soldier in Sierra Leone.
When did you read it: Portagul at the search event last year.
How'd it get in your hands: Charlotte, Damien's wife, gave it to me.
Why is it one of your favourite books: Boys soldier.

5. Damage Done by Warren Fellows
A true account of 12 years in a Bangkok prison by a convicted Australian drug courier.

When did you first read it: 1995, Mentawais boat trip.
How'd it get in your hands: Bought it in Perth airport.
